  What is snorkeling?
Snorkeling is swimming with fins, a mask and a tube called a snorkel that allows you to breathe with your face in the water.

What’s the difference between snorkeling and scuba diving?
Scuba diving allows you to breathe underwater through an air tank, while snorkeling allows you to breathe on the surface of the water with your face down. Scuba diving requires certification and expensive, heavy equipment, while snorkeling does not.

  Why do people snorkel?
Because it’s fun! It provides relaxing fun in the sun and a glimpse at life under the water.

  Is snorkeling safe?
People of all ages can participate in snorkeling. It helps if you’re a good swimmer, but it’s not required. You should have some level of comfort when you’re in the water, but your fins well help a great deal in terms of movement and flotation. If you don’t feel completely safe, you can always use a flotation device. Many snorkels also have alert whistles on them, in case you get into trouble.

What equipment do you need to snorkel?
Fins, a mask and a snorkel, of course.

a) A mask is what you put on your face that allows you to see underwater without getting your eyes and nose wet. It’s important that your mask fits correctly in order to seal out the water. Most of our masks have silicone skirts (the soft part that touches your face), which create an excellent vacuum seal against water.
b) A snorkel is a hollow curved tube that is placed in the mouth and allows you to breathe with your face down in the water. Many of our snorkels are submersible, which means that you can even dive underwater with them and water won’t get it. Of course, wait until you surface to breathe again.
c) Fins are what you put on your feet to help propel you through the water. There are two kinds of fins: closed-heel and open-heel. Open-heel fins have an adjustable strap. It all comes down to preference. Your shoe size is a good guide when choosing fins, and a snug fit is always best.

Are your snorkeling masks suitable for scuba diving?
Yes. Most of our Professional and all of our Dive N’ Surf series adult masks have been used to depths of 100 feet.

On your open-heel fins, what shoe sizes do S/M and L/XL convert to?
S/M fits sizes 4.5-8.5, while L/XL fits sizes 9-13. All sizes are based on US sizing.

Is it hard to learn to snorkel?
Most people pick up snorkeling very quickly. It helps to practice in a pool before moving to the ocean.

What conditions are good for snorkeling?

It’s best to go snorkeling on a sunny day when the waves are minimal. But don’t forget your sunscreen!

How do I take care of my snorkeling equipment?
Protect your gear from light and heat. Excessive sunlight could damage the silicon parts of the mask, making the seal less effective. Heat can also degrade your mask and snorkel. After you finish snorkeling, wash your equipment off with fresh water. It’s also a good idea to wash your mask lens with soap every once in a while. And don’t pile heavy objects on top of your equipment or the shape could be affected. Keep walking on land in your fins to a minimum.

On your catalog mask descriptions, what does “Meets ANSI Standards” mean?
ANSI is an acronym for the American National Standards Institute. The organization coordinates the development and use of voluntary consensus standards in the U.S. and represents the needs and views of U.S. stakeholders in standardization forums around the globe. So, it means that our masks meet really high standards.
